Why Union Virtual Academy?
Our Mission at the Union Virtual Academy (UVA) is to provide a high quality, age appropriate, virtual education opportunity for the students at Union Public Schools. By choosing Union Virtual Academy, you become a part of Union’s constant innovation for academic excellence. With a caring staff and a culture of inclusion, UVA not only provides a choice for students and parents but strives to keep your family connected to all that Union Public Schools has to offer. With the ability to participate in any of Union’s co-curricular programs from athletics to fine arts to clubs and school events, UVA bridges the gap that other virtual programs cannot. Parents and students should discuss, ask questions, and then together decide if UVA is the right choice for them.
The deadline to apply for Union Virtual for 2021-2022 has passed. Contact Gart Morris, executive director of Instructional Technology, for information.
Union Virtual Academy Student
At Union Virtual Academy, we understand that students have unique personal interest, talents or needs that may not be compatible with a traditional school setting. UVA embraces life beyond the classroom without sacrificing a quality education. Our program also allows for in-person support when necessary, so students always have a path to academic success.
Our program offers structure with flexibility that allows both self-pace and guided instruction with Union’s amazing teachers and staff. UVA courses are both engaging and rigorous, backed by a proven course design, meet all state standards, and designed to be age appropriate for maximum participation.
At UVA we know that students learn in different ways and at varying rates. Some students enjoy listening to lectures; others enjoy working in small groups. Students who are visual learners tend to do best in online courses. Online learning offers flexibility and individualized instruction. However, it may not be the right mode of learning for you.
Online learning is ideal for:
Parent involvement is the pivotal key to any student’s success in virtual education. It is our expectation and requirement that parents are involved in the educational process and daily routines and lessons. We know that when parents provide close supervision and a culture of support students demonstrate improved academic results, higher test scores, consistent engagement and increased motivation. Union Virtual Academy has a specific role for parents. We call them the Learning Coach. A face-to-face coach responsible to support the student’s daily activities, schedules, and homework.
Union Virtual Academy for secondary students (6-12) will consist of a full schedule of core and elective classes. Students in grades 6-10 will have the option to take one elective on campus. This could be an opportunity for those wanting to participate in fine arts or athletics. Students selecting an on-site elective will need to provide their own transportation.
Students in the 11th & 12th grades have two options:
Union Virtual Academy for elementary students will consist of a full day of both live and self/parent-guided online instruction. Students may be required to attend in-person as determined necessary by their teacher. Parent involvement is essential for success in elementary virtual.
Both programs are considered a semester commitment. ll students will need to abide by the Union attendance policy for virtual and maintain academic progress while enrolled in Union Virtual. Students failing to participate may be required to attend in-person. Students in Union Virtual Academy have access to all the same resources, clubs, and opportunities that would be available at their school site. All virtual-learning students may be required to attend in-person for assessments or other instruction as necessary.
