ECHS Student Eligibility

Early College HSThis new program launched with an initial cohort of 50-60 students, beginning with the 2017-18 freshman class of 2021. The third cohorot was announced in the spring of 2019.

Though the program is open to all students who are residents of Union Public Schools, it is specifically targeted to serve traditionally underrepresented students, including low-income, first-generation college-goers and minority students.

The demographics of each cohort group will mirror the district’s makeup of free or reduced lunch, gender, and ethnic demographics reflective of the district.

Students must meet college admission and course placement requirements to take college courses, but  are not required to meet academic eligibility through a specific grade point average (GPA) or test score to enter the program.

Note: The Early College High School program is not for everyone. If students are active in extracurricular activities that conflict with their schedule of college classes, this may present a problem. We will do our best to make accommodations; however, for this program to be successful, students need to be firmly committed to their college course load.

Student Recruitment and Selection

Early College HSUnion will invite prospective students for the first ECHS cohort beginning in the fall of 2017.  An invitation does not constitute automatic acceptance into the program.

Informational meetings in October will be open to — and required for — all Union ninth grade students and their parents.

Students  will complete an application and two essay questions.  Teacher recommendations may also be utilized by the district to make final student selections.  Parents and students must agree to participate in key components of the program in order to qualify.

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
