Superintendent: Believe In Yourself, Seniors

Believe in yourself – even when others do not, Union Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler advised more than 300 seniors this afternoon, during the second of three commencements planned for today at the UMAC.

“Nelson Mandela offered this inspiration regarding the lives we choose to make by saying, “there is no passion to be found playing small and settling for a life that’s less than the one you’re capable of living’,” Hartzler said.

“Graduates make sure that when you look through your personal telescope, you find a life that brings you abundant joy and gives you real purpose and meaning in life. Make it a point to share your time, talents and treasures,” he said. “Be courageous, stand up for what is right, vote, be kind and respectful, and live a life that makes you, your parents and teachers proud.”

Valedictorians Ream Ghanem and Teresa Nguyen were selected speakers for the second commencement, representing students with last names G-N.

Last January as COVID-19 cases were raging in the Tulsa area, administrators had decided then to break-up the graduating class into three segments in order to allow for social distancing, while also providing a virtual commencement for seniors and families who could not attend in person.

After Senior Class Publicist Neal Kinney welcomed graduates and their families, Senior Executive Board Member Michal Harris and Senior Class Vice President Stephanie Melton took their classmates down memory lane. Senior Council Vice President Emma Jones talked about the “State of the Union.” Senior Class Principal Marla Robinson also congratulated the seniors.

The High School will host one more Commencements for students with last names O-Z, which will also be live-streamed on Youtube: https://youtu.be/-SEigd0KVzQ

Union aired its virtual Commencement Saturday, May 22; you may view it here: https://youtu.be/RZCvBt5smA4. You also may watch first commencement here: https://youtu.be/zQoXD9s1k9Q

Tonight, seniors will have an opportunity to celebrate in the annual Graduation Celebration at Incredible Pizza on 71st Street from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. https://www.unionps.org/GraduationCelebration
