You Deserve This: Union to Also Host Senior-Only Graduation at Tuttle Stadium July 23

Message from the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Dr. Kirt HartzlerThis is a follow-up to the decision to proceed with a Virtual Graduation in place of a traditional ceremony. One thing’s for sure: the desire to celebrate our seniors’ achievements is universal, and we want nothing more than to make this happen for them. This has indeed been an unfair situation for the graduating class of 2020. Download this letter in English/Spanish

After much feedback and input from parents and students, we have decided to move forward with planning for a modified traditional graduation on July 23, along with the virtual graduation planned for June 15.
After consulting with our student leadership, it was clearly evident that their biggest disappointment was not getting to walk across the stage to receive their diploma. They also wanted to be together as a senior class and to celebrate on their own home turf – not in a venue that has no connection to Union.

The safety of our students, families, and staff remains our highest priority. As a result, we have decided to host a seniors-only graduation ceremony on Thursday, July 23, at Union’s Tuttle Field, with the exact time yet to be determined. We believe we can safely conduct a ceremony limited to 1,073 seniors and maintain social distancing while complying with OSDE (Oklahoma State Department of Education) graduation and CDC guidelines. This in-person event for our seniors will be livestreamed for parents. I’m sure this will still be a disappointment to many parents and families eager to cheer their students on, but it does satisfy our primary goal, which is to fulfill seniors’ wish to walk across the stage and celebrate with their class.

As referenced earlier, we will continue with our plans for the Virtual Graduation Ceremony on June 15 at 7:30 p.m. It will contain all of the pomp and circumstance you would expect from a traditional graduation ceremony.
It is also important that I share all this with the caveat that, in the event the city, state, or CDC decides not to relax social distancing guidelines, there is always the chance that the July 23 event might have to be cancelled. This is certainly not our desire, but it is always a possibility in these unpredictable times.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. The Class of 2020 has been a remarkable one and we are deeply proud of them and all they have overcome. We look forward to giving them the send-off they so richly deserve.
Respectfully,

Kirt Hartzler, Ed.D.

Mensaje del superintendente

Queridos padres y guardianes,

Respetuosamente,

Kirt Hartzler, Ed.D.

Union High School to host ‘Virtual Graduation’ on June 15

Union High School has made the decision to host a “virtual” graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 on Monday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m., in response to to the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 1,073 seniors are eligible to participate in the virtual program, which will closely mirror the district’s traditional commencement ceremony. Note: Union will now hold a seniors-only graduation on July 23.

Hartzler said the virtual graduation will have many of the same features as the “in-person” graduation, including speeches from the valedictorian and salutatorian, as well as other Union traditions. “I promise we will do our best to honor the Class of 2020.”

In addition to the event, the district is making arrangements to schedule and photograph seniors and their families to memorialize the occasion. Sessions will take place over the next couple of weeks at designated locations at Union High School to comply with social distancing guidelines.

“I certainly wish we could have scripted a different finish for our seniors,” said Hartzler, “although this is a year they will never forget. It may not be the send-off for our seniors we had envisioned, but it will be an experience that is true to the Union way.”
