Oklahoma’s State Teacher of the Year Rebecka Peterson said she hopes to honor and celebrate teachers during a celebration this morning at Union High School in her honor after Peterson was selected a Top 5 National Teacher of the Year earlier this week.
“It is so good to be home today,” Peterson said, as she faced a packed crowd three stories high of students, former students, Union teachers and administrators and a number of state legislators and representatives from the Oklahoma State Department of Education. “Union is such a special, special place, seeing the faces of my students and my colleagues. I hope you all know I would not be standing here without you all today. You are the best.”
Rebecka Peterson, Oklahoma’s State Teacher of the Year, and a math teacher at Union High School, was announced today as one of five finalists for the 2023 National Teacher of the Year by the Council of Chief State Schools Officers.
On Wednesday, January 25, the Council of Chief State Schools Officers, which administers the National Teacher of the Year program, announced Peterson as one of five finalists for National Teacher of the Year. This is the first time in Union’s history that the district has had a finalist in the top five for the honor.
“As Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, I have had the joy of working on my passion project this school year, and it has been very near and dear to my heart,” Peterson said. “The goal of my project is to visit educators in each of our 77 counties, to watch them in their classrooms and tell their stories on social media. My hope is to honor and celebrate teachers, to share our collective stories, to remind us we are in this together.”
Peterson talked about her travels around the state and the gravity and impression teachers in Oklahoma have made on her, saying
“We cannot take them for granted.”
Union Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler thanked everyone who attended, saying, “This is a great day for union Public Schools. Equally so, this is a great day for the state of Oklahoma as we have one of our very own who has been nationally recognized ... as - We know this. It is no secret to Union Public Schools - .. we have an amazing, amazing teacher and educator.”
He said her recognition represents “the amazing excellence in education and quality of teachers Union has but also throughout the state of Oklahoma, “where more than 42,000 teachers pour their hearts into our future, which obviously we know, is our students.” Hartzler asked everyone to take a moment to thanks educators across the state for their work with students.
State House of Representative Melissa Provenzano also spoke, reading a special proclamation recognizing Peterson’s outstanding ability to inspire teachers.
Throughout the event, Peterson was applauded, hugged and congratulated. Legislators personally commended Peterson, including State Representative Ross Ford, who is a former member of Union’s Board of Education, his wife, Lisa Ford, a member of the Broken Arrow City Council and also a former member of the Union Board of Education.
Other Oklahoma State House of Representatives who attended included Jeff Boatman, Meloyde Blancett and John Waldron. Broken Arrow Mayor Debra Wimpee also attended the fanfare for Peterson. Oklahoma State Senator Jo Anna Dossett also attended.
