Union is celebrating Coordinators Appreciation Week.
Special spotlight: Union visits with Community Schools Coordinator Derek Frey of Ellen Ochoa Elementary
How long have you been a coordinator?
This is my 3rd year as a Community Schools Coordinator.
How did you get into the role of a Community School Coordinator?
As a teacher, I realized there were often layers of needs that students were not having met and that could not be met within the classroom - prerequisites to the brain being capable of the psychological and cognitive process of learning - as coordinators, we strive to provide those layers of support so students become capable of learning and striving to their potential.
What makes you proud to be a Community School Coordinator?
I am proud to be a Community School Coordinator because I believe a village (school, family, and community) raises stronger children than any school or family can alone.
What is your favorite thing about being a Community School Coordinator?
One of my favorite parts of being a Community School Coordinator is helping youth see themselves as members of a greater community of people rooting for them, and that they too have an essential role in creating the community they hope to live within.
