Union Board Of Education To Consider Suspending Mask Mandate

At a special Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 30 at 7 p.m., the Board will consider suspending the district’s mask mandate. If approved, the measure would take effect immediately and masks would no longer be required while indoors on district property.

In September, the Board enacted a measure requiring masks for students, staff and visitors, with exemptions for medical, religious, or strongly held personal reasons while indoors on district property.

Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler has asked the Board to consider suspending the mask mandate based on the steady decline in COVID-19 cases among staff and students over the last few weeks. As of Nov. 18, the total number of positive cases have declined to 52, from a high of 185 cases reported on Sept. 8, 2021, a 72% decrease.

In the event the Board of Education approves suspending the mask mandate, administrators will continue to closely monitor COVID-19 cases in the district. If positive case numbers increase among students and staff, the Board of Education may consider re-instating the mask requirement. If the mask requirement is reinstated, the opt-outs previously submitted by parents/guardians will remain valid.

Parents and community members may send any comments regarding the possible mask suspension to [email protected].
