Teachers of the Year: Cedar Ridge

Special Education teacher Hannah Jimenez has been named the 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year for Cedar Ridge Elementary School.

“I became a Special Education teacher after observing a music therapist at an early childhood center,” she said, explaining “My original plan of study was in music. I fell in love with the unique way students were learning and dreamed of teaching with an individualized, unconventional approach.”

How is teaching different this year?

“While there are more regulations and time spent sanitizing, teaching is still fundamentally the same,” Jimenez said. “My aspiration is still to connect with students, find what works for them, and champion their success.”

She has been teaching at Union since 2015, pretty much since she graduated from college.

“I obtained my Master of Science in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership with an option in Special Education and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music. Both degrees are from Oklahoma State University,” she said. “I also taught two semesters of a continuing education math course for adults with disabilities at Tulsa Community College.”

The District Teacher of the Year will be announced during an online event on Monday, January 11, 2021, during a professional development day. Being named Teacher of the Year is one of the highest honors a teacher can receive at Union. All of the school site Teachers of the Year will be recognized in January.
