This is Chuck Perry, Director of Secondary Education at Union Public Schools, and I would like to inform you about the new Canine Contraband Detection program we are starting at the high school in January. This program will assist us in creating a safer and drug-free learning environment for students, staff, and patrons. Dogs will be utilized for conducting safety sweeps and will focus on parking lots, locker banks, classrooms, restrooms, and common areas. The sweeps will be used to identify firearms, drugs, and alcohol and deter these items from being brought onto our campus. The dogs do not sniff people and will respond to detection by passively sitting next to the determined location. All investigations will be conducted by building administrators in the same manner as always and will follow all legal guidelines. By attempting to eradicate all contraband from Union High School, Union’s goal of 100% College and Career Ready will continue to be the focus for our students and staff.
